Helmet strap retention snap - fix in progress
Like many (whether wearing one by choice or by edict), I have added a quick connect buckle to my new helmet strap, much to the detriment of that flimsy, little red plastic snap that holds the tail of the strap.
I could have decided to just tuck the loose end under the strap every time I ride w/ this helmet and move on, but that's not my way.
After a pretty exhaustive internet search, I finally found replacement snaps.
They are not exact replacements for the original parts, but the new base, (with an extra long stem) worked well to replace the original part that broke.
I simply reused the original 'snap side' w/ the new base.
Using a nail punch and a cigar lighter, I was finally able to heat it up enough to melt just the stem down inside the 'snap side'.
It took me about 5 tries to get the heat and pressure right, but I'd say this strap is now about as good as new w/ a quick release on it to boot!
I ordered parts from here:

What I have done is to cut off the excess strap and use a lighter to seal the now-frayed nylon. I leave about 2 inches and then wrap the main strap together with the "flap" with black electrical tape. That usually works well for about a season or so. 2" is long enough to work with but short enough that it is not too itchy or flapping against my face.
Now that I am thinking about it, probably the best solution is to take it to my professional vendor and just get an heavy duty snap. Same idea as the OP. Locally we have a guy who specializes in leather repairs, productions and modifications - mainly motorcycle gear. He makes custom chaps, jackets, hats and vests and has done repairs and mods on my chaps, jackets and gloves.
