i'm in kali and from what i was told you need at least one mirror on the bike. and then i took both of them off because it looks so much cleaner without them. i figure when i ride i'm so paranoid about cagers i'm always looking behind me anyways so i might as well just take them off.
I also believe that mirrors are required. The comment about wanting to see where all the cagers are is a good one, it saves on snapping your head around trying to wonder where everybody is. I use my mirrors a lot. One thing you might think about. In the early years when custom bikes were running the streets where I lived, they also didn't like the looks of the mirrors on their bikes, so they got the smallest possible mirrors that they could find. They ended up getting small mirrors like the ones used in the Dentist offices and they satisfied the law without the mirrors sticking out like a sore thumb. I believe mirrors are there for a reason, but you can do something about the size.
I had a mirror that slid into the end of the handlebar on the clutch side on a chopper I had. I think Yaffe makes one but mine was round and only about 2" in diameter...I don't remember who mademine but it was pretty slick and amazingly enuff I could see really well with it.
