Do it!We rode to Washington state this past August, went to Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse monument, Little Big Horn, Winterset, Iowaand anywhere else the mood took us.I'm 56, and I'd do it again tomorrow (weather permitting). The only down side is now we're addicted, and plan on goingagain. By a different route, of course.

Rode from Kentucky to Portland, Oregon & west coast a few years ago, 3250 miles in one week. I flew back, it was a work thing. I'd leave again tomorrow if I could...

No you are not CRAZY!

Owned my first bike when I was 20 -

First date with my wife went like this- I showed up with the bike - she looked at it - I asked are you getting on - she did - we are now married almost 30 years

Got away from the bike due to raising a family and career.

Four years ago, bought a new bike - 28,000 miles in 4 years
12,000 this past summer which included several 2,000 mile trips - WHAT A BLAST

Waiting out the winter and planning next years trips already

I am now only 52 ----

GO FOR IT - YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT

You will have a blast. I'm 61 and the better half is 58. Last April we left Ca. for Maryland. Went the southern route to Key West and up the east coast. Ended up taking 6 weeks and put on 11,500 miles. Went thru rain and a hurricane. But it was a great trip. We are going the northern route next May.

Do it while you can!
I'm 59, wife is 54. Had bikes for a lot of years, then got out of it several years ago, then got the bug again in April 2006.
Bought a new Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic, had over 8,000 miles on it in 3 months when I traded it in on an 07 Ultra Classic on the way back from Sturgis.
Got 20,000 on the Ultra now, did a 4 week 7,500 mile ride this summer, adn also bought a 04 Heritage last Ferbruary that I ride on the short trips. Put a few thousand miles on it too.

Yep, I like to ride, and I ride a lot!

You being a trucker, you have seen the country, but not like you can on a bike!

Go for it! You'll be glad you did.

Could be a mid-life yearning to do things that you missed when younger. Nothing wrong with it though...just follow your instincts. You don't mention a family, but that would also be a consideration.

Could be some of that, Dorkman, but I can also tell you, it's different on a Harley..did it , more than once, as a 'kid', on a metric...story wierdly like Harley Guy's...got the Hog, we started travelling, same roads, different somehow...and better. Maybe from being older, and actually looking and enjoying now, maybe not....
If your s*&t is looked after, do it, only live once!!

I want to do a cross country as well,,, I have family in Montana and I have a special friend in Athena Oregon,, Gary Davis ( Springer here) that I want to include a visit with him again,, and to visit a special place that he knows I have a desire to go to out there. I work for myself so funds are limited at this time, but I know since I'm going to be 52 this summer time is slowly going by. I ain't scared of the miles,or going by myself, it's just the time it will take to do it,, I figure at the very least three weeks out and back.

Thanks... I guess I need to start thinking about where I want to go then... LOL

I suppose I should look into getting an Ultra then and mybe even a trailer too as getting a motel will be a luxury thing.

I know one place I want to stop is at Eagles Nest on 25(east of farmington NM)... it was one of the prettiest spots I have ever seen when I first started trucking over the road some 14 yrs ago.

Maybe when this come closer to reality I'll ask more questions about road gear needed and stuff.

Funny, after reading all the positive responses, I'm kind of excited now...
