Over the past couple months I have felt this calling, this urge of getting on a bike and just going cross country. I’ve even gone so far as joke about it with a friend or two… of course they laugh and say they would like nothing better than to do the same thing, but I know differently.
It's pretty simple, really. Do you want to be one of those guys that always talks about it ... or one of those guys who has done it?

I've gone coast to coast twice in the past 5 years. Both times were solo. It was miserable. You will get rained on, mosqueto bit, sunburned, butt sore, and a whole lot more. But you may also have the best time of your life. I can't wait to do it again in a few months.

Got the same desire. I'm working my way up as far as trips go. I've done a couple trips of about 1000 miles this year, and next year am planning to possibly visit my Dad in North Carolina and possibly my Uncle in Virginia, which would be 1000+ miles each way with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the general neck of the woods.

I've also toyed with the idea of trying to go to Sturgis, partly because it would involve going through a whole strip of states I've never been to before. That ride is a harder sell, though, since most of the trip would be flatlands whereas I can set up a pretty scenic trip from here to Virginia.

Man I'm 30 and am planning a trip from Va to Co in June. Its not crazy its a thing that in your blood. You had a bike once and probably wanted to do it then. Now its eating at you that you didn't do it when you had the chance. The only thing to do is do it or it will eat away at you untill you die.

I'm 38 and need to get some more miles under my belt before I make the pilgrimmage. But as soon as I feel I'm ready its gonna be Ohio to San Diego to visit a buddy.
I bought our house from an old biker who now lives next door. He told me one of the best things he ever did in his life was leave from our driveway and ride his bike up to Alaska and back by himself.

I relate completely. I had the same feelings for years, had a cruiser and did a few 1,000+ trips but it didn't cut it. Finally this June we bought an Ultra and I hit the road, 1,800 miles in August and my big 5,400 mile trip (Columbus, OH to San Diego, CA) in October. On all long trips I only set the departure & return dates, no schedules/reservations, no specific routes, try and stay in small "mom & pop" motels and take any dirversion that strikes me as I'm tooling down the road.

There's nothing like it and I'll do at least one cross country trip a year from now on.

I'd recommend a touring bike if you're shopping for a bike, you can do it on a cruiser but I think you'd enjoy it more riding a full touring model.
