Default Pets and Riding

We just put a deposit on a mini dachshaund pup ,red female and ordered a pet carrier for the luggage rack. Does anyone have any expierence carrying pets. ?The carrier looks pretty safe and only the head sticks out of the top.I believe JP cycles carries these although we got ours through another source .Any suggestions or thoughts on this ? My softtail is loud and the only drawback is it might spook her.Of course,we wont take her until she is a few months old or older.I plan on having her with me at the HOG rally in May,so look us up.We are probably going to be grandkid less so we figure a lap dog will have to do.

Heheh - I thought this was a little silly until I saw this - Pet Carrier - There are a number of options out there on google also - I would just let the pup hear you start the bike as much as possible and get it used the smells also - encourage her to sniff around the bike etc.... Ride her around the block, stop and give her a liver treat - Make it second nature to her and you won't have a problem

P.S. - All I did was to poke a few airholes in the tourpak and my boy just loves to rattle around in there when I go riding!

When I worked on farms I carried sheepdogs on an off road bike heaps of times with very few problems.A small dog like that wont be a drama on a softtail. Start carrying her in your jacket as soon as you get her and as she grows she can move into the carrier. She may get a fright at first but she will love it, remember only a motorcyclist understands why a dog sticks it's head out a car window. There was a bloke years ago here in Perth who used to cart a Husky around on the fuel tank of his bike until the cops suggested it might be be better if the dog rode on the pillion seat so he cut up a milk crate and tied it on with couple of occy straps.

I'd ask a Vet....only concern would be long term exposure to the exhaust. I have seen/heard of many dogs in side cars, but the exhaust is much behind them...weheras a luggage rack is right over the exhaust.

Just like gun dogs, expose the pup immediately. Early exposure helps to build a lifetime of confidence....maybe even take the bike to the breeder and expose your pup before you take it home. Some dogs will be shy forever and can't take it, while others will come running with curiosity.

I ride to avoid pets and children, no offense intended. It used to be that a man could find solitude in a bar or library, not anymore.[sm=guilty.gif]

Oh...by the way...I've got a golden retriever that won't accept running alongside the four wheeler and chases my RK all over the place....he's a little to big for the luggage rack, but loves racks on the 4wheeler.

The only room she will need is enough to move from side to side to keep her nose in the beeze.

My only concern would be bad weather, can't really put the cover on it with the dog in there. Also make sure to crate train your new dog correctly, if not many dogs will equate going in thier box as punishment when they should consider it there safe place. So even when the box is not on the bike make it available to her so she can go in and be comfortable in it.
