Default Dumb question... Loctite/Permatex?

I've been told by some people that Permatex and Loctite are the same company. I've been told by others to use one, or the other.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

http://www.permatex.com/about_history.htm

n January of 2001 Permatex finalized on the acquisition of the Permatex International Business from Loctite. In 2002, Permatex re-entered the industrial market with a broad range of products including its proprietary waterless hand cleaners; silicone-based sealant and gasketing materials, anaerobic adhesives, epoxies, lubricants and other specialty chemicals.

So they're no longer the same company, but how do their threadlockers compare?

Don't have any data at hand, but Loctite is better known for its thread holding properties, and Permatex for gasket sealing. You can't go wrong with either as long as you select the right product for the application and follow directions.

Loctite used to own Permatex and if you asked the Loctite folks, they would probably tell you they screwed up by selling that part of their business. As far as the threadlockers and/or other products, Loctite is still the leader in their industry. There are many "wannabe's" that offer similar products...3M, Prolock, Devcon...none of them with the development in technology(or marketing) that Loctite has. They key to successful use of their products is knowing the applications...what to use where.

Don't know but any Permatex lockers I've seen are just the 3 basic ones. I always search out Loctite as I've use many of their other products which are great. Each number has a function and I like that. Permatex reminds me of silicone sealer which in my view is **** when it comes to engine building. Won't stand up to gas, plugs up oil holes etc no matter how little you use, or dries before you can torque up the damn part.Best suited for eaves troughs in my view.

Permatex thread lockers are more readily available than Loctite around here. I've never used anything but the blue Permatex locker (same applications as blue Loctite)It works nicely. I've also used the Permatex high temp thread sealant successfully to stop an annoying primary drain plug leak, so I would recommend theirproducts.

While they are now seperate, they are both sealing companies. Permatex - silicone and gasket sealers; Loctite - thread sealers/conditioners. If you can't find Loctite thread sealer, but you can find Permatex, you'd be fine. The Permatex silicone sealers can be very useful is you use the right product for the right application, just like threadsealer. Their copper gasket setter is very helpful to hold and seal many of the gaskets for cases and covers.

Be careful with the silicone sealants. The ones that have that vinegar smell are not oil resistant so you can see where a problem could arise.

I think it was more of a problem with screwing up 02 sensors. They have reformulated the product to eliminate this problem. Don't have that smell any more when using the engine types. Myself, I've discovered Loctite 515 10 yearsand never looked back. Fantasic product for cases, two and four strokes.
