Catching one of these Mississippi bugs at 70mph is about like getting hit with a rock. I does make you think though. I like my half helmet and windshield. I didn't used to like a windshield until I bought the RK. Now I don't like going without it. Glad to hear you didn't get a pavement sandwich.
What I find fascinating is , Not only are their people on here criticizing the use of helmets at all, but they feel the need to come on this thread and relentlessly advocate not using a helmet and how uncool it is to use one. This sends out a message to the rest of new motorcyclist. You do have the right in some states to make the decision yourself to wear protection or not. What you don't have the right to do is influence others not to wear Helmets. New riders, especially the highly suggestible are being manipulated into now wearing helmets because they think it's not cool and they want to fit in. You do not have the right to do that. If you want to ride without protection, then do so. But have the respect to others that do consider wearing safety gear .
Tel you what, When you buy your son a bike next Christmas. Be sure not to purchase Him a helmet or safety gear . Tell Him he has the right to bust His head wide open or get His skin ripped off. I wan to see that. WHAT ? You say that would be STUPID ! Your not going to let your son do that. He will kill himself ! WHAT ! So what's the difference ? Your wife and kids don't deserve a daddy to come back home in one piece ? Or is it COOL to have your gray matter shipped to your family in a box.
Studies have shown more times than I can count that the wearing of safety gear and helmets have saved countless lives and prevented skin grafts. That alone is enough for me. But if it's not for you. May be you should talk to some people I know who had to have a new face surgically installed..
One argument is true. Everyone does have the right to choose. And each man has to live with those choices. Or maybe not live.

First Amendment biotch. You're probably one of those guys who started smoking because of Joe Camel. So far on this thread I have yet to see anyone use the arguement that it was cool not to wear a helmet. I may be wrong, and you can point me to one that did, but from what I see you are vastly mis-stating the facts.
In my opinion riding a motorcycle embodies the spirit of freedom. We who ride I think understand that there is a degree of danger or risk every time we get on or bikes, but feel theses are out weighed by the pleasure we get from riding. I am amazed every time I see someone in full face helmet and leathers doing wheelies at 70 mph down the interstate. Safety gear does add a degree of protection, but in no way makes any of us bulletproof. Despite some of the arguments I have seen to the contrary, helmets do reduce injury and help save lives in more cases than not, so wearing one is really about individual choice which is cool. I have a friend who slammed into a car the other day that ran a red light so hard that it broke his front fork. He was mighty glad he had on his helmet and because of the temperature a pair of insulated coveralls so there was no road rash. I for one see no reason for folks not sharing their riding experiences. I think it helps remind us of the hazards of ride which is not a bad thing, but how we choose to address them should ultimately be one of choice. With that said, need to get dress and head out riding.
Yeah HarleyForever. If people dont have the right to tell them their opinion on wearing a helmet then what gives you the right to tell those people your opinion on tell them their opinion? These are the people I am sick of, the people that keep telling everyone you cant do that or you cant do this. Make your comment back it up however and leave everyone to their own choices.
kinda funny that the full faced guys are about 95% 2007 members! Im wondering if you guys are the fellers ridein arround wearing a full faced helmet and shorts and tennis shoes??
Have any of you preachers ever thought about it might be WHERE you ride that dictates the helmet you wear? Like maybe a full faced wouldn't be bad if your running 75mph on the interstate thru Chicago or Cleveland or some other big city. But if your cruseing 40 or 50 on the Ultra on backroadsinTennessee maybe a full faced is a bit of overkill! And I like my 1/2 helment when i"m cruseingmy Ultra.
Now I do wear my full face and FULL leathers when I'm ridein the Busa, but I am usually on the EDGE when Im' ridein it, and I don't mean crusein either. So full gear makes alot of sense.
Maybe ayears experience willhelp them see the light and let those that ride decide!
Yea, I can see how this must be pretty funny for you oldtimers. What was it like way back in the old days of June 2006?

Some graphic pics back there... had his finger ripped off without a full face, did he?
If youdon't mind the occasional 2"x4" fragment, stone, truck thread, nasty insect to the face, then shorties are your thing. But one spill face first into a Buick,(if you live)could mean months of rehab for looking cool.
That's what it is about, ain't it? Bein' cool? For others or your own gratification? Notjudging anyone, just want to be clear about whyanyone decides forego personal safety over looks.
I do believe it is about appearances. I asked thisin another thread and still haven't found a real benefitto 1/2 helmets over full face. The only thing I have personally observed is better vision, depending on which full face you use.
Please. I wear a 1/2 lid cause it's the law and that's the most COMFORTABLE way I can comply. In free choice states, I go lidless, because it's the most COMFORTABLE way for me to go. I couldn't care less what anyone thinks of me or if I meet some idiot's idea of "cool".
These posts always get people worked up, the "less gear" folks all act like the "more gear" folks are trying to force em to gear up or something, you can't share an experience or thought without getting attacked for it. If you find yourself laying in the hospital bed wondering where your skin went and how the extra knots got on your head let me know if the first thought that flashes into what's left of your melon is, "man I'm glad I wasn't wearing more protective gear." Good luck out there tough guys, I'll just keep gearing up for the crash until they start paving the roads with NERF.
Cause a lot of the time the "more gear folks" ARE trying to force 'em to gear up... through bullshit legislation or their pathetic condescending attitudes and comments towards those who CHOOSE to wear less gear than the "more gear folks" think they should. You know, like when "more gear folks" say **** like "If you find yourself laying in the hospital bed wondering where your skin went and how the extra knots got on your head let me know if the first thought that flashes into what's left of your melon is, "man I'm glad I wasn't wearing more protective gear." Good luck out there tough guys, I'll just keep gearing up for the crash until they start paving the roads with NERF." Thus implying that "less gear folks" are stupid for choosing the "less gear" route. Most "less gear folks" have evaluated and accepted the potential consequences of their choices.
I don't know why some people can't just live and let live. Almost all "less gear folks" say "wear whatever YOU want to, just don't force ME to wear what YOU want to", while a LARGE percentage of "more gear folks" seem to feel some need to push their idea of safety or whatever onto anyone who doesn't agree. It seems that most "less gear folks" are more interested in FREEDOM TO CHOOSE than most "more gear folks".
