Default evo vs tc88

ok, so here's my story. i was planning to get a harley this spring, april or may, with a budget of 11000, and i would have 2500 to put down. i was going to get a later model with a twin cam, and either a night train, wide glide, or street bob.
well, today i found a '99 night train, so it has an evo, for 8500, and i have 1500 to put down. it seems like its in really good shape and it has a lot of extras with it.

so what does everyone think of the evo? i know its a good motor, but is it painfully slow? how is the power compared to the tc88? i'd like to do this deal, it'll save me a bunch of money. but i also don't want to settle for a sub-par bike.

man , I think you would be fine. I know I wouldn't care. The TC88 is painfully slow stock as well so It might be a none issue.

Not one thing wrong with an evo, if you can get it at the right price.
They are not slower than the 88 by much if any, and a cam ,and pipes + air cleaner would bridge that gap,and then some.

If you ever want to build serious power; the TC is a better design. Also, the EVO Softail models vibe quite a bit more than the counterbalanced TC's (2000 up) If you can take it for a ride; you may or may not find out.....

No comparison between the EVO and TC...

I've put a lot of miles on EVO's, as I owned a number of them and still have my '96 WideGlide, along with a Panhead, Shovelhead, and a couple of TC's.

If you compare 'stock' for 'stock', your average BT EVO will be putting out about 45 to 47 rear wheel horsepower, while a normal TC will show 62 to 64 rear wheel horsepower.

Unless you want an EVO just because it's an "EVO", I don't see any reason why you would want one instead of a TC, especially if you plan on putting a lot of miles on the bike..

Here is an interesting articleby Donny Peterson (with input from the HD engineers)detailing the TC engines, components used, and improvements over the older EVO.

https://www.hdforums.com/m_491389/tm.htm

I've averaged around 20,000 to 25,000 miles a year on Harley's for the past 37 years, and the TC's I have are the most dependable and worry free of any bikes I've owned.....

But, if you justhave your heart set on an EVO they aren't bad at all, but in my opinion they aren't in the same class as the newer TC's...

Here is my EVO Dyna WideGlide;

If I was to buy new and there was an enginechoice I'd go with another Shovel.

Doesn't mean a Panhead or Shovel is "better" than a TC, but I do prefer the Shovel's over any engine family...

Still,if I was a newer rider, planned on riding a lot of miles, andwantedas little maintenance as possible, the TC is the way to go....

And speaking of 'Shovels'..

With the budget you have and the way the market is you could very well have your pick from just about anything. I saw an '07 StreetBob on here for $9K, a '06 RoadKing for $14K and plenty of older bikes with lots of life.

I'm not sure what you are riding now and how important power is to you. I have a '97 Superglide with an EVO and love it. To me riding a Harley isn't about getting there fast, it's about enjoying the ride. I ride with several guys who have newer bikes and everyone of them likes the way my bike sounds compared to theirs. Like I said you have a lot of choices with the budget you have. Research around, take some test rides and pick the one that suits you best.

best of luck and be sure to post some pictures when you get her
