Wow, there`s a wealth of information to be had here, and good feedback on the stage 1, I might add. Other than changing fluids and filters, I am pretty much at the dealer`s mercy however, so I will need to pay the dealer for my ignorance, as I wouldn`t chance doing the install myself, lol. A wretch perhaps.............a wrench..........not !
When you get the S1 kit, you will find a backing plate some bolts and an air cleaner. The backing plate is a bit larger hole for air to pass through than the stock one. You also geta set of breather tubes. The install instruction sheet is pretty straight forward. After reading mine, I installed my kit in the parking lot of the dealer before wheeling it in for the remapping.
I had the stage 1 and race tuner added before I picked it up at the dealer made huge difference then when I added reinhart true duals and re-dynoed the bike it was even better Tons more power than stock and never had any problems with warranty work

Let me see if I understand you correctly. Are you saying that I will see further improvments if I change the air cleaner and install something like a SERT?
As I said earlier, I changed the pipes and did the remap. I thought this was as good as it gets. My bike runs great but if it can get better then I am saving my coins for more upgrades.
The wife is going to shake her head at me some more I guess.
I just want the weather to straighten up so I can ride.
Damn, you don't hear that term much anymore! LOL...
People used to understand that this is just what you did to a new Harley to get it to run like a Harley...
The Stage 1 is a high flow A/C. Bigger backing plate and oil breather tubes. You also loose the black enclosure on the backside of the A/C for more airflow. Usually it comes with a K&N filter.
They will generally put into the package some kind of SE slip on pipe and you will need a download for the ECM. More air coming in and going out will make it run way lean and will damage the engine if you run it like this for a period of time.
You can get away without the download if you only run slip-ons and the stock a/c. Change the A/C and you need the flash even if you had the stock pipes on. Richen's it up.
Now most dealers will have the whole package at a reduced cost. You do not have to take it like that. You can have different pipes if you like. You would have to ask if you put on any complete exhaust system(Header pipe and Mufflers) if you would need a flash. More than likely you would.
On my 02, I had the full shot right out of the box. High flow A/C, SE Slip-on's with cross over removed and ECM flash before I took delivery. I've never has a problem with it and it's been running perfect. It has more power than stock and mpg's are better as well.
Well worth it for what I do. If your bound and determined to put a SERT or some other type of system soon, save the coin and just do it. The flash costs more than the A/C. Ride it stock for 1000 to break it in ,then add whichever system you want, along with the A/C and pipe and get it dyno'd in. Most won't dyno it before this mark anyhow.
I would have to say that 75% go this way (Stage 1 a/c, pipe, and flash) are more than happy and never go any further. Myself included. The cost for the a/c and flash is will more than likely cost between 250 to 400. Pipes are up to you.
