I'm a tight a$$. I polished stainless steel. Every day at work over my lunch time I would chuck up a bolt in the lathe and polish the head. Would do 3 or 4 each day. Stainless won't rust like chrome. So I say stainless..........

Finally found someone on here as cheap as I am. I am LMAO at your post. I do the exact same thing, 1911. "cept I do my polishing in the gurdge. And my son works at a major home remodeling center (Name with held to protect the innocent ) that stocks stainless bolts. When I build a "show" bike, I use chrome for the visible, and polished stain for the rest. On the "road warrior" I use stain for almost the whole build. I use "anti-seize" compound on the threads to prevent galling, or loctite if it is a critical component. I posted a list of stainless polishing products in an earlier thread if anyone is interested.

I'm GUMBY Dammit !
Almost forgot, 1911 hit it on the head. The real benny with stainless, 'pecially if you use allen head caps, you DO NOT get that little bit of rust in the allen that is fugly and impossible to get out or polish.

Da Gump,,, made a very good point,,, as when I worked at the Nuke plant,,, if we used stainless bolts, if they galled, or cross threaded,, whatever,,,, you have a nightmare!!! not a easy fix!!
so, ya just gotta be carefull!!! And use thread lube.

Polish the stainless. When rebuilding I try not to use torx just Allen cap head whenever possible.
