Well...when you're being passed by a Mexican pickup truck with 12 wooden garage doors on it, you need to upgrade... Actually I plan to upgrade simply because I want more pulling power when we travel. With luggage and the wifey and me it's a struggle sometimes to pull through the mountains. Other than that I'm happy with what I've got...sort of..
I think the difference is that a Harley is like having a muscle car. They are American, they rumble and they look good doing it. It's no different than installing a new cam and mufflers on an old hot rod.It may not be as fast as that Evo Lancer that the neighbor kid has but it attracts a whole lot more attention than that rice burner ever will.
If someone has the money and wants to spend it on improving the performance of their bike what difference should it make to you? Just make what ever changes to your motorcycle that that you would prefer and do not worry or obsess over what someone else spends their money on. After all, it is their bike and their hard earned money thatâs going in it.
I can't see why anybody would want to modify a 96in Harley motor. Spend around $3,000 to $3,500 to gain 7 cubic inchesa few horse power and some extra torque. It's just beyond me, oops I guess my sig gives me away. To fire up my (hot rod) "to me" 103ci, twist the throttle on my 50mm and hear the sound through my Rinehart true duels. Well the money was well spent in my humble opinion. At 61 almost 62 to have a stock bike next to me with some lets say younger rider on something besides an old geezer glide like mine and to leave them in the dust is also very satisfying. But I say to each his own I enjoy the hell out of my modified bike.
There are infinite shades of compromise between the absolute racer, as fast as it can be, which concedes nothing to anything that isn't performance, and the ultimate style-bike, which is pure design, or the ultimate cruiser, which is devoted solely to comfort.
The nice thing of customizing your bike is that you can shift the factory compromise somewhat in another direction, if you're not satisfied with what you got.
Perhaps I want the style and quality of a HD, but with a little more power, so here I am buying a stroker kit, or a whole S&S engine...
When you look at the huge variety of HD based bikes out there, it's obvious there's a Harley for everyones taste and budget.....that's one of the things that attracted me to the brand. There, for sure, are cheaper alternatives in different catagories but I'm sure no other one bike could satisfy me like mine does.

Unfortunately I did not, I did all the work at the same time. Along with the 103 kit went with the roller rockers, SERT K&N high flow and 257 cams. I do not even have the stock motor to compare, had all the work done prior to taking delivery of the bike. Didn't want to do break in the second time. I can say I'm very happy with my build even tho my builder wanted me to go with a 2 into 1 exhaust set up and to reach the magic goal of 100/100. Got close but no cigar.
