Startling information from a fairly reliable source...
'HD is a class 3 motorcycle, that is it has CERTIFIED with EPA as having a useful life of 5 years or 36,000 kilometers = 18,000 miles !!! And no matter what anyone tells you that is what HD certifies their bikes for'.
'In USA with EPA and CARB every manufacturer has to warranty the Emission system performance for the USEFUL LIFE of the vehicle and it is the manufacturer that declares what it is and has to support it with engineering data. If they misrepresent the durability data then they can be fined $5,000 to $25,000 per vehicle ! SO if the company under Federal Law certifies their product to be durable for 18,000 miles or 5 years you should take it seriously. Since 2000 both EPA and CARB are enforcing the law and both SUZUKI and YAMAHA just got fined big time, just for having the WRONG LABEL on the bike !!! (Emission Certification Label).'
Anyone like to add anything to this??
Clearly these bikes CAN last much longer than 18,000 miles, but if this report is accurate then it is interesting to see what the MoCo 'true' estimate of the lifespan of components is listed as!!!

Even if it's stated dead on, there's always some unhappy bureaucrate that believes as so many people do today, that words don't really mean what the writer says, that it is the beholder or reader that determines the TRUE meaning.
But as far as Harley go these days, seems to me that there are more harley owners trading in for new models much more often than ever before. Now couple that with the fact that so many of these same riders trade in with very low miles on the clock. I know riders that if they ever reach 36000 miles it would take them 10 or more years. And again most have traded by that time.
Question:
Have you ever looked into the tests that certify a DOT rateing on helmets.
Although it's very scientific, it's only more fangled than the test result limitation. Those limitations for DOT certification is equal to that of dropping a helmet from the top of a six foot ladder.
Some helmet companies exceed those limits but not all. Oh, once the helmet has been test to that limit it no longer can be certified as a DOT rated Helmet
