I go both ways (TANK BADGES, silly!!!!) I like the "older" badges, but not the "newer" ones. So, I like yours removed. Now, if'n you were to score a set of "older" ones from V Twin or J&Pand throw them on your bike, I'd like that better. But, just like Farns, take that with a spoon of sugar.
And I don't think the "badges" solve Farns' complaint. I have ppl asking me all the time if the chop is a shovelhead, or a "new" bike, etc. There are just some folks that just do not know bikes, and that is ok, too. I don't know "ALL" the cars out there and I am a puter "dummie". I'd like to think that that does not make me a "bad" person, no more than not knowing "bikes" makes someone a "bad" person. JMFUO tho.
I am debating whether or not to put badges back on the 78FLH. It is black and badgeless right now. If I can afford it, would like to have a small mural of "The Wall" painted oneach side vs badges. My other option would be to go back to 3 1/2 gal tanks, 40-46 Knuck badges with the trimstraps and tank shift with foot clutch, way "ol' school" I LOVE that look.
But, to each their own.
But I am also very biased on this topic. All of the H-D's I've built over the years are always painted PPG Gloss Black with lots of clear coatsandZero badges, decals, pinstriping, flames, murals, etc.. I just like the whole bike to be Gloss Black with Chrome, Aluminum and Steel to set it off.
I've never once worried about if other people could tell if it was an H-D or not for any of my rides I've built.
If they could not recogize it was an EVO Big-twin with an S&S Super E bolted up, then I just knew they had no clue what the hell they were really looking at anyways, so it never mattered to me.

Thats a nice Knucklehead you have there Gump.....LOL
Actually, I think your bike is awesome!
Do you put many miles on the ole Pan?
BTW, your right about no one can know every model of this that and the other thing.
Howdy, neighbor. We put "all" our miles on it. We had to sell our Ultra 4 yrs ago [:'(][:@], so the "Ol' Cap'n" is all we have had to ride since. Picked up a 78 FLH and redoing it as we speak. We are "working " our way back to a bagger. Build and trade, build and trade. Been looking at EVO Ultras, and want to put a 124" in one again, and slam it and"custom" paint it. I'm from SoDak, checkout Klockwerks http://kustomcycles.com/ Brian and the Boyz build some "mean" baggers there. I stop out there when I am out home visiting family.
Ican do450+ in one day on the Cap'n, LONG a$$ day, buddy. Momma can only take about 200/250, and her back just goes to chit. But he runs out real good. I have it geared for 75+ at less than 3000. Not a "drag" bike out of the hole, but rolls the highway real EZ. It is far and away the "best" handling chopper I have ever built or rode since the 70's. THANX 4 askin', Farns.
