The windshields I have had I have had to look through. In the rain if I sit up to see over the shield I get a face full of water,or fog the water rolls off the top and into my face.If the shield is set to where everyone says, would not bugs or flying rocks not hit the shield but hit you instead? Also when it is cold I wear a full face helmet,I can feel the wind buffeting my helmet,if the shield was lower, wouldn't it be worse?
I've cut both my Heritage and Road King windshields to about nose height, and they do fine. I wear a full face helmet all the time. Haven't noticed wind too bad unless there's a strong head wind. Don't get many bugs either.
my low profile on my sportster came to my chin, 15000 miles and I never had a buffeting problem, my half helmet did not pull and my glasses did not move, it did channel the air up over my head and most small bugs. I could never get used to looking through a windshield so it works for me. There is about an 8 inch area above where you can catch one in the face, ducking works if your lucky and see it coming.
My new Crossbones is getting the same setup I hope I don't have the buffeting problems like some have, keeping my fingers crossed.
For me the windshield is mostly for wind noise, I can hear my surroundings and the engine 10 times better with the low windshield.
I look thru my RK shield....works well enough...but I've had bikes with lower (mouth level ) shields and I would have to dodge the occasional bug or whatever....sometimes I was successful, sometimes not [:'(]( kinda depended on the wind swirl )...I'll keep looking thru it
I set my HD quick release windshield so it is just below my line of sight when I am in my normal riding position. When I was still wearing a full helmet the face shield overlapped the windshield enough to avoid any problems. Of course with the full face helmet I don't have any problems.
Asa side note; with my windhield set the way it is and the vehicle in front of me is completely above the windshield I am about 2 second behind it at 65-70 mph.
On my RK Custom, my windshield is about at nose level. I get some big time buffeting though. Sometimes it even blurs my vision it's so bad. Gives me a headache after awhile. I'm getting ready to order a Clearview shield with a recurve. I'm hoping that will help.
