Custom front fender clearance

I've got a Nightster front fender I want to put on my'01 FXDXT, but I'd like to mount it closer than stock; how much clearance do I need between the fender and tire???

About 1/2"you can go a little closer but not much.I used a thick extension cord for mine works great!

I'm at 3/8" with no issues,I've seen some guys go as close as 1/4, depends someonthe tire you're running.Some brands will expand more than others.

Thanks guys; think I'll go with at least 1/2"; have radials on the bike; they shouldn't "grow" much at speed. Have been up to over 120mph...would also like to integrate a double loop style fork brace; gonna fab one out of 1/2" heavy wall steel tubing...will post a pic when done...thanks again.
