Ever since I smoked a tire I use 1/2" min. Was running one brand of tire with a closer fender tolerance, but ended up trying a differant brand and discovered that not all brands expand the same. No problems since going to 1/2".

Although its probably greater than a 1/2", alot of them recommend laying a section of garden hose over the tire and laying the fender on that.

Default 21 in wheel and tire

Odds are if your putting a custom fender on, as long as it for a 21 in wheel conversion you should not have a problem with that. But you should swap out to stiffer springs or heavy oil in the forks. I had a problem with the crash bar touching the back of my fender and putting a small dent in it now I have to get it repainted. Its going to have to wait till next winter though.

I have about 1/4" clearance on my 08 SG, 21" Metzler 880. I run the side wall spec pressure and have had no problems in 3800 miles, ran the bike as fast as 110mph. I've heard riding in stones you may pinch a stone between the tire and fender and crease it.
