The roads arouind Alexandria are pretty good compared to here in south Louisiana around Lafayette and New Iberia. You need a dirt bike to ride these roads with all of the pressure ridges that have existed for years here. These are absolutely the most horrible roads in the world that have asphalt or concrete on them. You have to drive at least a hundred miles from New Iberia to find any smooth stretch of road. I have lived in Louisiana all of my life. Raised in Westlake and moved to New Iberia in 1988. I am ashamed for people who drive around New Iberia to know I am from here in Louisiana. All of our politicians are crooks who are either in jail or on their way to jail with all of our money safely put away in bank accounts and their full retirement benefits that they worked 10 years for protected by state law. I drive by a hundred people every morning sitting on their porch drinking their 32 oz. who have never been to work, are not going to work today and never have any intention of going to work. Why should they? I'm taxed to the bone to pay for their houses, food, health benefits, alcohol and drugs. I'd look hard at Texas. I am.
And, by the way, if you're going to work for the state of Louisiana, you better check into the retirement benefits and health care for state employees. It ain't what it used to be. The crooked politicians have whittled away at them because it was whittling away at the money they could put in their pockets.
Otherwise, it's a good place to live if you can stand the mosquitoes and like to fish or hunt.
Tbones, thanks for the info. I work for the Feds, so I would be transferring. I am originally from New Jersey, then moved to Colorado, Texas(near San Antonio), then Indiana. I live in Illinois but work in Indiana. The 2 areas of Texas would be near Austin and the other is near Midland/Odessa. I would prefer the one near Austin, but It really won't be my choice.
Crawfish. 17 million pounds harvested in some years. 16.8 million pounds comsumed locally.
I've got the physique to prove it too! BBBbbbuuuuurrrpppp![sm=icon_cheers.gif]
tbone, where in Westlake did you grow up/live?I married my first cousin from Westlake and we live there now! How bout those Westlake Rams......eh? WOOOT!!!!
The roads in Texas are pretty good in the places I've been (which are not many). My wife's boss has a few ranches up near Teneha, Timpson and Carthage, Texas (NE below Longview). We ride up there a couple of times a year and the roads from north of Opelousas through Alexandria are good all the way to the ranch. It's about 340 miles from here and a nice ride after we get out of Acadiana where the sugar cane grows. The sugar cane trucks are all overloaded (120,000 lbs.) and tear the roads up around here and no one fixes them.
I don't know a thing about Austin or Odessa but, I have heard of them.

OMG!!!!!!!!!! Stay the HE!! away from that barren wasteland of Odessa!!!!![sm=forgetit.gif][sm=noooo.gif] [sm=noooo.gif]I take back all I've said about Loosiana! Forgive me!!! You will commit suicide if you move to Odessa!!![&:][&:][&:]
AUSTIN for sure. Seriously. Austin is big time happening and a FANTASTIC place to live. Top notch schools, hospitals, and of course restaraunts.
Man, don't tell my wife about Midland. I have her convinced it won't be that bad. I guess Alexandria is better than Midland, huh?
If I've EVER been serious, I'm serious now...............Midland/Odessa is a sand pit dust bowl barren wasteland that I will not even fly over in an airplane again, much less visit, drive thru, whatever.
Yes, Alexandria is the lesser ofTHOSE 2 evils.
Austin is where you should really focus IMO. Opportunity abounds in that city. Your wife and family will love you.You and your wife could network friends in a rural community and cash on in for the rest of your life in bliss! Mucho to do in Austin. You could be in Big Bend country in just a few hours. Northeast Texas is nice too. The advantage of being centrally located in Texas is a win-win situation......IMO. BUT WHATEVER YOU DO, STAY AWAY FROM ODESSA. Your little bride will leave you if you wake up there.[&:][sm=icon_ladiesman.gif][sm=scared09.gif]
