Default EPA requirements - just curious

I understand, even if don't agree with, the fuss over noise complaints and loud pipes. The thing I'm curious about is why is the EPA so set on making these bikes with so many emissions requirements. I would think that the amount of emissions on these things is negligible compared to bigger vehicles. I mean, they are allowed in the HOV lane for a reason (at least here in the DC area). I know, kind of a naive question, but bugs me anyway. Are motorcycles that much of a threat to the eco-system that they need to keep the thumb down on us?

Think of a bunch of really "insignificant" people making policies the cause EVERYONE to bend to "their" whims.

There is a Group of people who like to dine outside at these fancy sidewalk cafes or live adjacent to boulevards that some bikes like to cruise on. They don't live along the hiways where the louder semis roam. So, they hear the exhaust of the bikes, call their pals in the the state law offices and it starts from there. Why bikes, they have stereotyped bikers as a bunch of illeterates or anti-social types and we are usually the easier target. Motorcycles are resonsible for less than 5% of emissions but we do seem to catch the most attention. Again why?

The EPA regulates nearly anything that makes noise or creates emissions. They are not picking on motorycycles.

Just google EPA Lawnmowers or EPA chainsaws or EPA diesel engines or EPA marine engines or EPA weed eaters or......

Motorcycles, however, may be more intrusive into citizen's peace and quiet, and therefore draw more attention.

The reason bikes are allowed in HOV lanes is because it's safer.

Guess I should be grateful for the HOV whatever the reason. Helped yesterday as I plowed to work in some fog, and HOV was least crowded of all the roads I took.

There's a lot more motorcycles on the road now and the majority of them are not emission compliant. Congress had talked about making tampering with motorcycle emissions illegal but nothing came of it in part because it would put almost all the independent companies out of business.

It is just the nature of any regulativeagency to try to expand its turf.More regs mean more employees and $$$ to enforce them, greater political clout, etc.
