Default Interstate Riding

OK, at the risk of sounding like a complete and total idiot I have a question for those of you daily commuters. When riding in heavy traffic, which lane of the interstate is generaly the safest to be in?

I used to ride the interstate a lot. I always stayed in the outside lane (farthest to the right). This let all the idiots pass me on the correct side, and gave me a better avenue of escape should something go wrong. Most center medians, regardless of composition, don't mix too well with motorcycles.

The safest lane to be in is the one whose current conditions make it the safest. Changes all the time. Ride Safe.

Here in California the carpool lane provides less lane changes for cars so I tend to use it. I'm not a fan of the slab but can't avoid using it.

I agree with Just Dave, but a fellow biker told me something that made a lot of sense. He said he always rides in the fast lane (far left lane), because you see a lot of cagers who are about to miss their exit and cut across three or four lanes to try and make it. He himself had previously had an accident where he had been riding in the right hand lane and someone tried to go from the fast lane all the way across a four lane highway to make their exit, taking him out in the process. He suffered a broken collar bone, and a lot of road rashin the incident. It seems to me though crap can happen no matter which lane you are in. The best advise is to always ride defensively. Watch out for the cagers, because they are not watching out for you.

Thanks for the replies. I've been riding for awhile but I've never ridden as daily commuter, but now with gas prices what they are that 40 mile one way looks alot more affordable on my Heritage than in my F150!
