I posted last month how I busted a clutch cable on a fairly new Harley Wide GLyde (2007) with about 1400 miles on it. I wasn't so happy that it happened at 60 mph, but these things happen.
Had it flatbedded to the dealer and they said it would be ready in a couple of days. Date was April 25. Called a few days later and they said the part was backordered from HD and wouldn't be available until May 23!
I checked and it seems legite. Finally part was released and I got my bike today.
I asked if this was normal and they said unfortunately with HD this is a growing trend.
This is my first Harley, I love the bike but man 1 month for a clutch cable doesn't seem so cool.
There is no valid reason for them to make you wait nearly a month for such a common part.
Especially if it is under warranty.
I'm sure they could have made something else fit to get you going until the proper item came in.
My bike is 13 years old. I almost expect to get treated like crap by the dealer.
I would not tolerate it on a new one.
From: South of Raleigh, and west of the coast, NC.
RE: HD Parts
That is BS .....never should take that long to get a clutch cable for that new a model motorcycle, dealer should of had one in stock or either had one overnited to shop and got you fixed up and back out on road. As fas as breakage on the cable , sounds like the cable was defective can't imagine one breaking with so few miles unless it was faulty.
Out here in Hooterville, the problem isn't as much getting parts as it is getting service time. A week or so ago, I was at the local shop gettting a part and overheard one of the dealer guys talking to guy about when he could get his bike in the do some work. The dealer guy tells him it will be July 9th, almost a month and a half away.
i keep telling you guys go to indy~s, no way would i of left bike 30 days i would of paid for a aftermarket cable, or of asked for a loaner bike from dealer
NEWS FLASH! Dealers do not stock hard parts any more. Most parts that actually make it RUN are ordered from Milwaukee. If it's SHINY they'll have it in stock.

I bet they had a wide glide in stock that they could have took it off of if they didnt have it in stock, i would have thrown a fit till they made it right. there is no reason that you should have to be with out a bike for so long after paying so much for the bike.
I gave up buying parts at my dealer long ago, I just plain gave up and I like them, they never have ANYTHING in stock!(I take that back they once had a derby cover gasket in stock and some bolts, which were wrong, went to Lowes rather thanride all the way back) So they don't want to maintain an inventory at full MSRP, fine, I'll order from Chicago HD and save 20% off list no sales tax, another 8.9%, and shipping is reasonable. I had to wait 1-2 weeks for stuff from dealer, 1-2 weeks from Chicago HD, umm... it's a no brainer.
