I often wear a plain ol' eastpack for gym clothes, beer/ grocery runs etc. \\; I take a slim day-pack style hydration pack by outdoor products to work everyday.

Just cinch the straps tight to your shoulders or air can make it ride up on ya.....the straps can beat ya a little bit too...
I have used a cargo net to attach my backpack to the passenger seat or luggage rack. Have worn it a few times when riding. But quickly found out it was just as easy, and way more comfortable, to strap it to the bike.
Check out the bag in my signature picture. Its a Kuryakyn Tombstone bag and works better than a backpack and acts as a backrest. There are several other options too but this one worked best for me. It its on the passenger seat and is strapped to the sissybar. It has two addon bags so you can have more storage space but I hardly use them because this bag is pretty roomy for its size.
Since wifey has a tragic addiction to Mountain Dew, I can get an extra twelve pack of the crap home by using a backpack.
