When I was younger, the older guys in my group always said never wear a back pack when riding, it throws off your balance and is therefore unsafe. Because of that, when I had a back pack, I always bungeed it down somewhere. Of course, now I have a Road King and it's no longer an issue. \\;
My work briefcase is a backpack. \\; Laptop compartment, notebooks, cell phone, etc. \\; \\; I wear it to/from work all the time. \\; I did have to cut off the extra length of straps as they'd flap around at speed.  \\;
I wear a backpack all the time. \\; After work, I always go either to the gym or a martial arts dojo, so I always have to take clothes with me. \\; Since I ride a stock Nightster, I don't have many other options. \\; I also strap a japanese sword to my back (along with the backpack) for a class I take on the weekends. \\; I'm not sure how it looks, but I really don't care.
funny you mention this. i processed a guy who was locked up last night for riding his wheel with no eye protection. inside of his backpack, he had 456 grams of weed.
