I noticed when I parked my FXDI \\; my speedo backlight was on.I checked to make sure that the ignition switch was turned off in the right position. When I hit the brake pedal or lever it goes out momentarily and then back on.I unhooked the speedo in fear of a dead battery. Also the brake light does work fine.If anyone has a clue I would definately appreciate it.
thanks
2006 FXDI..I am having the same issue. The speedometer light stays lit after turning bike off and removing key. It appears to be happening after washing the bike. I had noticed a white residue around the ignition key hole. I have been taking the key out while washing. The dealer replaced the ignition switch but the problem has come back. I plan to get some type of electrical contact cleaner\lubricant. Also sometimes when I tap the front break lever a few times it will go away. Any one else here solved this?
I had some wierd things going on with the guage lights, turn signals and idiot lights on my 02 lowrider. Turned out to be a pinched wires coming out of the triple tree. Had to take apart some of the harness and splice in some new wire to fix the problem. Not saying that is your problem but there is power back feeding the light from somewhere. Good luck with your solution.
Check your plug connectors for corrosion. If dirty use a contact cleaner that is safe around paint and rubber. Apply a good dielectrical grease. Look for pinched wires or places where the wire is subject to fatigue from movement. Something is back feeding past the switches.
Hi Greco_Superglide, I know this is an old thread by I was hoping that you can help me out. I am now experiencing the same issue with my speedometer and I was hoping you could offer me with some insight as to how you resolved the issue.
I am also having this issue now. Anyone find real answers? No pinched wires here.
I have the exact same symptoms.. Tach light and odometer stays on when the key is completely out (In off position). When I hit the horn, etc. it restarts, with the backlight going off for as long as I hold down the horn button.
How did you guys resolve yours?

I'm reviving this thread because last Wednesday my bike started doing this same thing. I put the battery on the charger/maintainer and after a couple of hours the backlight went out. Yesterday, after being off the charger, it comes back on. Back on charger - backlight off. Beats the heck out of me. It's crazy that hitting the break or horn makes it go out. It's under warranty so later this month the dealer gets a crack at it. Oh, it starts fine. Bike sits in the garage on concrete.
From reading the other responses and from past experience in vehicle electrics, I would have to say that the problem is, as others have said, a back-feed. You have to check your wiring. Get a multimeter and check the continuity in your wiring (disconnect the battery to do this). Also check for voltage where there should be none (do this with the battery connected). That should narrow down the problem.
