It's quite simple really. Motorbikes evolved from bicycles, which were originally viewed as a kind of mechanical horse. Horses have always been mounted and dismounted from the left side owing to the fact that most people are right-handed, therefore the sword scabbard was worn on the left side for an easy draw. Shove a yardstick through your belt on the left side and then try to mount a bicycle from the right side and you'll see what I mean. It only makes sense then to have the kickstand on the left. \\;

On the left because most people right handed and fuel shut-off on left, because kick stand on left. \\;
