I agree with just glasses, my eyes water like crazy but with my helmet/face shield, the wind blows my goatee but never my eyes.
Yeah, I used to use a 3/4 helmet and a face shield a long time ago. As I remember, I stopped using it because I began riding with some friends, and if I turned to say something to somebody at a stop, nobody could hear me. So I began wearing a half helmet with goggles, but finding goggles that fit over my glasses (and don't cover half of my face in the process) is a hassle all unto itself.

I install a small wind deflector on any bike I get from Sportsters, Softails, Dyna's and Vrod. The Stock shields on the touring are replaced with the small windsplitter's.
I likle to keep the wind and bugs off my chest area. I do not like to look through one.
It depends on what you like. I appreciate a windshield especially when it's colder weather or rain. Here in the desert rain is rare of course. From about the beginning of April on into November the weather is mild to HOT. My RK takes about 3 seconds to add/remove the windshield. I generally take it off in about April and it rarely goes back on until the Fall. I just love the feel of the open bike. Believe it or not I don't even notice the wind even at 70-80 mph which is what 80% of my riding is - open highway and long distance of about 50 miles each way to and from town (I live in a rural area far from the city so it's always a 100-mile round trip run on the highway just to go into town).
Ride and set up your bike how you want. Have fun and enjoy it is the only rule. Gear, accessories, are all fun and everyone likes different things. I change my bike around as I feel like it. TourPak on or off, dual seat vs Solo seat, etc. Windshield is nice at times, but totally unnecessary for me about half the year.
It is all about trying to portray an image.

I, on the other hand prefer comfort.
It's all about getting more wind - in the summer, it sucks to be stuck behind a windshield or fairing. That's why I only use a detachable windshield or fairing on long trips.
