I got rear ended today on my 07 Sportster. Local dealer gave me an estimate for $750 which I'm certain the other guys insurance company will pay. I will wait 6 to 8 weeks for a new fender. My son says I should try to get paid for "diminished value" as this crash will show up on a carfax type report. Has anyone ever heard of or done this? I'm thankfull I wasn't hurt at all.
My nephew had his Nissian Titan rear ended a couple weeks ago and he's filling out the paperwork for diminished value on his Titan since the insurance want's to repair it. I would assume the same applies to motorcycles, just not sure how they figure the dimnished value. \\;
Be careful and do your homework before you jump into this. The insurance companies a totaling motorcyles like crazy. I have a very close relative that works for a major insurance company that insures motorcycles, their feeling is they would rather total the bike and pay the estimated value of the bike than deal with the repair and troubles that are associated with it. And be aware that most insurance companies base their buy out on an estimated value, not a true replacement cost. Just a little food for thought.
When I got hit last year the insurance company said since it is a Harley they will pay anything to get it fixed unless the frame is messed up then it would be totaled. They spend almost what I paid to fix it up.
I had the same thing happen to me, sportster was rear ended, damaged the fender, etc, probably a \\;little more damage than yours actually, and when I traded it in at the dealer (the same one that fixed it) they just gave me the standard amount for it from their little book. \\; Noboby cared about the previous damage as far as I could tell.
it is money because you can not erase an accident and when you trade or sell it must be told. 2 bikes side by side what would you pay for the wrecked 1, what would you pay for not wrecked? it is your money get it!!!
Some states recognize diminished value claims, some do not. \\; Those that do not do so under the idea that once the motorcycle / vehicle is repaired correctly it is "made whole" \\;and thus, it has no diminished value.
 \\;
As far as insurance companies "totaling" a vehicle, it normally has nothing to do with make, model or what is actually damaged including a frame. \\; I'm not sure how frame damage is viewed on motorcycles...I doubt they can be straightend in the same manner as a vehicle. \\;
Its the cost of repair compared to the market value of the vehicle, and the threashold is typically 75-80%. \\; So, if the cost of repairs meet or exceeds 75% of the value of the vehicle, it is then deemed a "total loss." \\;
 \\;
Everything doesn't show up on a Carfax report and not all incidents are reported by insurance companies.

$750 is not much of a hit. A fender, couple pieces of trim and labor will \\;top \\;that with no problem. I doubt 'diminished value' would be a factor.
I really f'ing hate dim value claims. \\; How was the bike diminished in value? \\; Will it lower the resale value when you sell it? \\; Nope, it's a fender. \\; On a vehicle with some frame damage yes. \\; Currently I have a 2007 ferrari that took a rear end hit with less than 3000 miles. \\; yeah, that's a collector piece he bought brand new. \\; A 2007 SPORTSTER \\; has no real collector or want value.
