Agree with what most have already said. \\; It sucks, but I think handing the $500 back is worth avoiding any BS your wife might face at work. \\; It'd be a nice gesture.

Hmmmm tough position. \\; Theres a couple ways to go. \\; Its not 100% give it back and its not 100% keep it. I read a post that said to give it back but once you've sold the bike her deposit made you take it off the market \\; \\; So she should get it back but since you put it on the new bike deposit she should wait until you sell your old bike at least she is getting it back
or you can feel sorry for her and give it back straight up
