The rubber on my HD grips is starting to breakdown. Since I ride a lot(everyday at least 70+ miles) I have worn out a set in what I consider a short time. Now the grips themselves are in great shape, no chrome wear no scuffs or damage, just the rubber compound is breaking down.
Sooo, off to the dealer I go to get replacement rubber. I thought that since this would be a high wear item and I can get replacement rubber for my foot pegs that the rubber for the grips would be replaceable as well.
Sad to say its not, got to spend another 69.00 for a new set, throw away a perfectly good set of grips(other than the rubber) and go through the hassle of installing the WHOLE grip just to get new rubber.
Now, am I wrong in thinking this is BS? Why should I throw away good material just because the rubber parts are worn out? I like the grips, I LOVE my bike, but these days with money a little tight it doesn't make sense to throw out good parts. It would be like having to by a brake caliper to change the pads.
Those are the exact same grips I have and the rubber is starting to come loose from the metal a little. I could have sworn I saw some replacement rubber for them buut maybe I was looking at the pegs.
How old are yours? I would love to have replacement rubber. I cant see tossing good parts away just because the rubber is bad. Its sad that we are such a "throw it away" society. It would be one thing if I hated the grips, then it would be a good excuse to change, but I like them, but I refuse to pay 69.00 just to get new rubber. If I have to do that then I will go aftermarket with a set with replaceable rubber.
yup..mine are starting to do the same thing...I'm having the reduced reach handlebars installed on my Roadking soon ...so I'll have the grips replaced then..
That is why I went to solid billet chrome with no rubber inserts. I changed out the foot pegs and grips at the same time. I got away from rubber on my foot pegs and gripes. I bought HD grips because they lock into the handle bar with the switch and lever assemblies. No grip glue.
