Dream about it all the time. 6 years and 10 months and I can live it. Will be retired from the JOB and two of the three kids will be grown and out of the house (I hope) and I can take all the time I want and ride to the places I can only dream of going now.
I have been think a lot about doing this lately. I return home in 13 days have have a scheduled two weeks off in June. I will spend the first week with the family and I'm thinking of taking off for the second weekend. I would love to ride through the mountains in NC/TN then up to PA and finally return driving down the coast. I'll let you know what happens.
Ive done it. It was great. NY to CA over three weeks, just zigzaggin across the country, dropping in on friends who had moved or been deployed inland.
I had just quit a job in Manhattan, and was looking for a small city to move to with a university, decent economy, good weather, low housing prices, and capable airport. Oddly Nashville came close to what I was looking for, but in the end I kept going and landed in the SF bay area, which had everything I wanted except the low housing prices. No itinerary, just a good set of maps, a working motorcycle, and a few people and places on the list of possible things to visit if I can. This same lack of iterary has served me well exploring europe and s.e. asia.
Having lived on both coasts and overseas, I was really amazed by the country. I had never been inland before, and met great people, and rode some fantastice sites. New Mexico, Arkansas, Virginia, Arizona, and Tennessee ranked especially high on the list of interesting places. Oklahoma was pretty boring to ride through, and got pulled over for 105 mph. their fines are pretty steep too, but I was let go with a warning! Gotta appriciate that.
I did a three month ride in 1972 before going into the Army. No itinerary, no plans, not much money in my pocket. Wandered around Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas, up to Northern Minnesota. I've thought about that trip many times over the years. I will be retiring in 670 days (but who's counting) and will definately do it again.
