Welcome to the club! You better be the most defensive driver out there or your not going to be around long on two wheels! Happens more than I care to talk about!!!!

This happens so frequently (similar experience yesterday, only the guy didn't stop half way, he pulled out, saw me, then made a quick turn and pulled over to the curb. Put his head down and waved to me to say he was sorry). They even have a demo on this in the new "Ride Like A Pro" video. EXACT same scenario.
You make a good point that should be discussed. I have been in the habit of squeezing the clutch and applying equal pressure on the front and rear break in an emergency stop. Do others downshift?

It depends on which stage of "pulling out" the car is in. There are way too many stages to list them all. But if things have gotten to the point that I have to stop HARD, I squeeze the hell out of the front brake. There won't be much weight on the back wheel, so the back wheel will lock up way too easily. And I don't worry about downshifting. Hopefully I've taken care of that ahead of time.

When I see a car on a side road that I think may pull out in front of me, I quite often will weave from side to side to try and get their attention. Every little bit helps.

Watch they don't call the locals for a DUI! Kidding! I never assume the other guy can see me and I also try to make sure they do but do not flash your lights at them! They may think your giving them room to pull out. I saw a guy do that one day and the cager pulled out, end of story!

I grew up driving on dirt, so the rear wheel slide never bothers me. feels controllable. I'm less comfortable jamming up the frontas it throws your weight forward. I prefer to feel "back". I probably should use a little more front, but if it ain't broke...

They sure are out there - lurking!

Expect the unexpected! I've read post on other forums about people who hate Motorcycles and threaten to open their car doors on us.

When you see a car creep into the intersection. I try to eyeball the driver. (Just like they taught you in elementary school when you cross the street) You need to get Eye to eye contact.

As I get closer I try to pick up on their wheels. It is easy to pick up movement of the car on the wheel rotation.

And lastly as above always cover the clutch and brake and expect the unexpected.

You are a cat in a room full of dogs. Don't ever forget that.

Though not a daily experience for me, what you described happens frequently enough to keep my adrenal glands freshly supplied.
