EFI is supposed to charge the lines and then shut off. My pump kept making a screeching noise and not the whirl of the pump. Like I mentioned previously, $130 parts and labor was what it cost to fix it. So stand next to another bike, turn on the key and listen, then stand next to yours, and do the same. If it is not close, take it in.
+1
A slight whirring for 3-4 seconds, normal. A screech, not normal. Could be the bypass valve or the motor itself. Either way trip to dealer or indy is a better alternative than being on the side of the road...
I thought all Fuel Injected bikes make noise. When you turn on your bike your fuel pump should pressurize the lines. As long as it is running OK don't worry about it.
I had a pump go bad on my 01' Fatboy and it made a noise like a bad wheel bearing! When I replaced it I also had to replace the high pressure line inside the tank from the pump, it had a small hole in it. They all make noise when you first hit the run button, that is normal. I had 15000 miles on the bike when my went kaput!
I have a 2008 superglide, and when-ever i fill it up, the pump makes a whinning/squealing noise for a moment only, then after i ride it and burn off a little fuel then restart it it makes the NORMAL noise you hear when the pump is energized and charges the fuel line. Never hear the noise again till i fill the tank all the way up again. Bike runs excellent, no fuel problems, hesitation, etc. I believe what causes this is that some fuel gets in the 2 breather tubes inside the tank for a moment when the fuel level reaches the top when full, and this causes the whine noise till it gets cleared out. Hope this helps.
Mo Fo - that is my exact experience....funny thing...went with a buddy yesterday, filled it up to show him, and darn thing did not do it. I am going to monitor, and keep track. Heading in to dealer after I put enough miles on it for the 1000 mile service. Getting cold up here in Canada, but have pot 200 miles on it so Iam just over 800 miles now.
Thanks a lot for all of the feedback guys!!! Appreciated.
