Just throwing this out but I bought a direct lift and just love it. Didn't have the Harley lift...I like the screw type operation however I had a sears and that too worked ok. I just wanted to lift my bike higher and be able to work on it a bit easier. Attached is a link and its much cheaper than the Handy.
Skivvy9r - aaaaah. There you go then. If the jack fits in the crossmember, you are off to the races. I see.
Looking at the lift, and thinking about it, I'll bet I can remove one of the two pieces, and run it through my metal band saw, and make it narrow enough to fit in the crossmember, as you say. That would work perfectly, then.
Keep the jack away from the "bow tie" cross member! The thing is easy to bend. Only use the frame rails for lifting
Putting the lift elsewhere on the frame raises the bike in an unbalanced state. With the lift rail in the cross member it's perfectly balanced. It does not put undue stress on the cross member as long as the lift arm extends across both frame rails.
There ain't no friggin way I'd spend that kind of money on a jack. Mine is a AC Delco from Country General, about 80 bucks. Bottle jack that has a lock so it can't go down if the jack fails.
