Skill level isn't even so much a factor as is the reality that someone riding alongside you in the same lane limits your options if something goes bad.
Even in heavy traffic, you can slow down enough to let the uninvited lane sharing dingleberry get ahead of you and ride staggered. Just tap your brakes a few times to let the vehicle behind you know to back off a bit, and roll off the throttle.
No doubt, throwing the rider a "look" would certainly add to the message.
I have to agree,. Riding chips in heavy traffic isn't a good thing,,. If the car beide you trys to change lanes or the car in front stops short, your left without room to make quick changes to avoid a collision,. On an open road, so be it,. In traffic, stagger..
Slowing down a little is the best thing to ditch a stupid rider you don't know, if that don't do it,. keep a big stick with you to jam in there front wheel. :-)
I have to agree that the best move would be to start backing off. Touch your brakes so the driver behind knows you are slowing, and let the Jerk go on his merry way.
Turn on your turn signal on the side the jerk is riding, and give the hand signal to turn (change lanes), anmd make sure he see's it. the dipwad will get out of your way, or you will run over his stupid ***.
NO ONE rides next to me OR my wife...EVER!!!!!! I won't allow anyone to take my space and limit my options to escape a problem. I give a damn who you are, or who you think you are. One way or another, you won't be next to me.

Bingo , give that man a piece o raisin pie .. SxS , if sumpthin' goes wrong , neither of you have the reaction time , or the space to react .. I only SxS for very short distances with one or two other people , and only on roads with very light traffic ..
I certainly wouldnt share a lane with someone I didnt know If I wouldnt do it with someone I have riding with for years.. Easy solution is to simply back off the throttle for 15 seconds and let them go on there way..
+1 riding side by side is an EARNED position.... I have to know you, and want to... simply back off the throtte, and wave them ahead.... (or as I like to call it.... shoo they away) one finger salutes will just puzzle the dumbazz because they already have shown they have no clue...
maybe as you wave the bike ahead, you can do the slow down sign for the car(s) behind you... so they don't run you over?
Most riders in that situation will think they are dominant, Just back off on the throttle 5- to 10 mph, they will get bored and take off.... bunch of J-O's
Ride safe
I think it's more about the area that you live in where people do ride side by side. I have couple hundred friends that we ride with. There's no club but we will get together for the bike events in a days ride around this area. We could ride single file and be 20 miles long and stop all traffic going places. Or we could ride side by side and keep to one lane. Most weekend rides there is any where from 10 to 20 riders. We have some rider that are so bad to ride around we will let them ride alone and not double up with them. If we come up to other rides we will ride behind till it's safe to pass them as not to make them feel unsafe. There are some rider out there that will ride in both lane blocking the cagers and make it danger place for the bikers on the road. But some biker out there feel safer block all the lanes then ride together. I have bikes put up be side me most everyday on the road here in the Maryland area. If a biker is there and I would like them to leave I will ride a little fastest or slow as this will have them go on. But most times single rider in this area will hook up for more safe riding around the cagers. One bike rider the car will run you over a couple bike rider on the road cars stay back a little more. This only how we ride around here your area could so much different then the way we live here.

The ONLY time I will pull up beside someone is at a traffic signal - amd even then I am just slightly behind. Now will pull up and communicate with another rider if I need to break "formation" for some reason, but again, I would usually wait until we at a traffic signal or stop sign. Now with ALL of that being said, I usually prefer to ride alone and maybe, just maybe, with a few close friends on occasion.
