Default Car oil vs motorcycle oil

Does anyone use car oil in their Harley? I know that mc oil is required in metrics because of the wet clutch, but can car oil be used in dry clutch applications?

NO. Not in a Harley. The MC oil I use is formulated for air cooled engines.

Some will say Yes some will say No there is no real 'proof' either way. Spend what you can afford and feel comfortable with. Use the search there has to be no less than 500 posts about this topic

You are going to get a thousand responses on each side of the fence on this one. I use Mobil 1 15W50 for cars. It comes in a 5 quart jug from Walmart for about 25 bucks. I have used it since my first oil change on my 07 Ultra. I also use it in the primary. I now have 25,000 miles on it and no problems whatsoever. It is really what you are most comfortable with as ether one will work just fine.

My Sportster Service manual talks about certain Car oils that will cause problems/damage in a motorcycle engine, I don't have it in front of me at the moment, so I would say no don't do it. The cost difference isn't worth the cost of repairing an engine.

My .02 worth!

Here is the skinny, The HD motors are built loose in tolerances because of air cooling and expand more than liquid cooled motors and have more blow-by that trashes the oil so you, by standards, should use a specified V twin oil. The twin cam is the tightest motor HD made (other than the V rod) and doesn't trash the oil AS FAST so people are running regular oil with little adverse affects. It's your bike, run what you want.
