Default Best Roads

Spring is here (well almost here) and everyone wants to get out and ride. What are some of your favorite roads to ride in each state? Why do you like the road?

Here in Central/Northern California we have several;
Hwy 9 to Skyline Drive to Alice's restaurant in the Santa Cruz area...twisties through the redwoods
Hwy 25 in Hollister and south...twisties through the cattle country
Hwy 49...1 of the best roads with twisties through the sierra nevada mountains
Sonora Pass...same as 49
Hwy 1 to Big Sur...twisties along the cliffs on the coast
Carmel Valley Road...well underrated road with twisties through beautiful carmel valley...

Gotta be Independence Pass Rd. Ya know how when you look up when it's snowing big flakes and it makes ya kinda dizzy? Well that's how it feels riding through the giant aspens on this road. Beautiful. Closed in winter.

From here, we take old Hiway 23 (parallels I 35), to Duluth, SMOOTH (HARDTAIL!!!!) and WIDE shoulders, AWESOME scenery along the river. And VERY little, if any traffic. They are ALL on the Super slab. And then from Duluth, Hiway 61 along the North Shore.
Likewise, south of the Cities, 61, the run along the Mississippi, ALL the way to Naw Leens if'n ya want to.

SoDak, it has to be Needles Highway, and then back round on Iron Mountain Road, the PIGTAILS.

Another EXCELLENT run in SoDak, Custer > Hot Springs > Pine Ridge > Wounded Knee > Sharp's Corner > Rapid City. IF you still have time, hang a right at Sharp's Corner, > 44 via Potato Creek > Interior and then back to Rapid. This will roll you thru the Badlands, like most have never and will never see it.
IMFUO, this would be a GREAT day trip, for an HDF Git Together in Sturgis.

Montana, Hwy 212, Beartooth Pass. (Pack your long johns)

Ariz., Prescott > Cottonwood > Sedona > Flagstaff, Then have the helicopter pick you back up there, so you can AVOID the rest.
HI Ms Twiggy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Highway 12 ... Utah

Route 666 ... Arizona ...

The The Southern Caribou National Forest Loop ... Wyoming/Idaho

Independence Pass
(State Route 82) ... Colorado

Talimina in Oklahoma is already featured on the forum, but if you're in southern (especially southeastern) Oklahoma then try this one ... The Indian Trail Highway ... runs off 271 south of Talihina, OK.

AZ - Old US 80 - Peaceful and great isolation (and my usual ride to work!)
AZ-89 - High Desert at its finest, refreshingly cooler than the Valley
CA - 78 - Nice ride through all the trees, lots of good turns
79 - Great switchbacks (was a little charred and not so scenic after the 03 fires)
S-1 from the I-8 to CA-78 - Great desert ride and usually not a soul

BC:
* Highway 6 - Vernon to New Denver then hwy 31A to Kaslo then Hwy 3A across the lake and down to Creston. Spectacular scenery through the mountains, good changes in altitude, lots of twists not too much traffic
* Hwy 99 from North of Cache Creek to South of Whistler - Again, spectacular scenery through the coast mountains, good twisites
* Hwy 3 along the boarder - A little busier but quite a variety of terrain and scenery. Ready for this - mountains - tough not to be in mountains in BC

Washington
* Hwy 20 - From Port Townsend right to the east side of the state. Some spectacular scenery, variety of terrain and good road
* NF 25 - Road behind Mt St Helens - If you are there take the side road to the observation area. Good road, twistie as hell.

California
* Hwy 36 - Great variety of terrain, good road, lots of twisties
* Hwy 49 - Up the west side of the valley. A little busy but scenic and a lot of fun

Colorado
* Independance Pass - Twistie, very scenic, good road
* Hwy 145 - get in that canyon on a nice day and it is just magic

Idaho
* hwy 21, NF24, Hwy 55 and hwy 95 - Stanley to Grangeville - Great roads, twisties, scenery, etc
* Hwy 12 - Lolo pass - twisties

Wyoming
* hwy 212 - Bear Tooth Pass
* hwy 296 - Chief Joseph Hwy

Virginia & North Carolina
* Blue Ridge parkway and Skyline Drive - Variety of twisties and sweepers that goes on forever. great scenery

That's enough for now. There are so many spectacular roads in North America from wide open plains of the South West to the many bent roads of the mountains. I'll be looking forward to finding some new roads to explore on this thread.

I-95 from Boston to Miami so I don't have to make those really hard right or left hand turns. Then when I get to either end, I have someone turn the bike around for me and do it again, the other direction.

smooth pavement, lots of curves, and no traffic..... I like being out in the middle of nowhere, and enjoying myself, and maybe sharing it with people I know...

opps..... you meant telling everyone where the "gems" are..... sorry....<smile>
