Issue: What is the fastest stock Harley and how does it compare to the speed of a sport bike?
Some users feel that the V-rod is faster than a 600cc sports bike, while others think the sports bike are faster. Users will break down the differences in the engine and give their opinion of which bikes are fast and why.
Well, as an example since nobody is showing any real numbers A v-rod muscle was quoted as running a 11.3 quarter mile time by motorcycle-usa, a very good and reputable website.
As you see, the v-rod muscle is not too far off of the smaller crotch rocket bikes (Jap, Italian, and Brit)
Triumph Daytona (675 three-banger) - 11.3 quarter mile time
Suzuki GSX-R600 (600 inline 4) 11.11 quarter mile time
Yamaha YZF-R6 (600 inline 4) 11.25 quarter mile time
Ducati 848 (848 L-twin) 11.09 quarter mile time
Honda CBR600RR (600 inline 4) 11.10 quarter mile time
Kawasaki zx-6R (600 inline 4) 11.11quarter mile time BUT move up to the big boys and it gets smoked
Suzuki Hayabusa (1340cc inline 4) 10.378 quarter mile time
New Star V-max (1679 V-4) 10.85 quarter mile time SLOWED by major wheel spin
Ducati 1098 (1099 L-twin) 10.34 quarter mile time
Honda CBR1000RR (999cc inline 4) 10.31 quarter mile time
These are all STOCK... If you're looking for fast, HD is not the one... unless you count the limited (and not even close to road legal) destroyer, which can knock off 9.3 second quarters all day and get into the 8's with a great rider.

These numbers are old and way off. They are actually much slower than those posted by Motorcyclist magazine, which posts the numbers from various years. The stock liter bikes like the R1, Gixer 1000, CBR1000RR and ZX-10 are running in the low to mid 9.70 range at 140mph and the 600cc bikes Like the R6, Gixer 600, CBR600RR and Ninja 636 are into the mid 10's at just over 120mph in the first 1,320 feet on street tires. The 600cc bikes will top our at otr very near 160mph where the liter bikes will hover around 175mph.
A few posts back it was stated the vrod destroyer can hit in th 9's with the right rider, and a 600 do in the 11's. the major difference I see is the destroyer's msrp was around 32k, and the one at the dealer by me sat there for almost 2 yrs before I think the swapped another dealer for something else. For less then 10 k A 600's a steal for the speed you can get out of them, out of the box.,,,

This is the bike my son owns.
No production Harley could ever do this. There is no comparison.

I was cruising at a little over 100mph on my Heritage and my son just flat out walked away from me!
The saving grace is that he wants a V-Rod as soon as he graduates from school next year.
Do you consider a Rotax engine a Harley? And, the 600's are beating the Buell so far in the AMA this year.
If the money to back the company came from Harleya nd the bikes are sold at Harley Dealers then IMHO it's a Harley and Buell won Friday night on the speed channel...it wasn't even close that kid (Eslick?) can ride like a son of a bitch. Hey can anyone explain the difference between a Suzuki and an Arian Suzuki as I though I head them make reference to it? is it a Suzuki who doesn't like other races? LOL

So, if HD goes water cooled in the future and sources engines from Honda would you still consider it a HD?

Are you freakin nuts? Going that fast myself is OK but I would kill my kid if he did that...

Allot has to do with the rider. There are allot of 600cc riders out there who can’t launch their bikes. I guess there are probably allot of HD riders with the same problem, but typically HD's are easier to launch, and a good rider on a Harley can school a novice on a 600. Stoplight to stoplight I've never been beaten by a 600cc. That’s not to say that it can't happen, it's just that properly launching a sport bike takes practice, and the majority of 600cc riders out there (from my experience) aren’t any good at it. JMHO
