I guess I am a real dork, I have two hi viz vests, one mesh for summer riding and a HD vest over my leather jacket in winter. This thread seems to be getting lots of replies most positive replies and actually more wear them than I thought.
I am in the military but I don't have to wear one...yet. Here is the one vest I would not mind wearing if required to. You would just have to cover or remove the "iicon" logo on the back. The orange one isn't bad.
I wear the HD Hi-Vis mesh jacket. I work on a base as well, and we are required to wear highly visable colors (Reflective at night), long sleeves, gloves, long pants, and boots or you are not getting on base.
The jacket is nice, not really hot even down here in south Louisiana. I like the jacket because it covers all of the things I need to get to my job in 1 package. I hate long sleeve shirts, even in colder months I do not wear them, so a vest would require me to wear a long sleeved thing under it, plus my regular shirt.
I put my ID in one of the pockets, and it is easy to pull out for the gate check. On my base they like to handle your ID card looking for fakes. The vest with the pocket on it for your ID would be a pain for me when I had to take it out anyways.
I have had people actually compliment that my jacket looks real nice, which I though was cool.
Mine is a little different than the one you see in the HD Catalog, mine has more of a black front, and back with orange sleeves, some orange stripes on the upper chest, and a orange band of cloth around the waist. Reflective piping and the HD emblem in reflective on the back.
I said when I first got it, I would not wear it all the time, but now I just grab it and go, pretty much second nature.
I wear one of the orange reflective Harley-Davidson vests when I ride. I have two young kids and a wife that need me in one piece so I sacrifice coolness for safety. When I don't wear the vest, I almost always have someone pull out in front of me. This hasnt happened when wearing the vest . I've had people tell me they can see me 400 yards away. It's too easy to go unseen so looking like I work for the DOT road crew is okay by me.
I wear one. You think I give F*** what people on here think. Some F*** pulled in front of me going 75 down hwy and when I finally caught up to him...MF was reading a book!! No one on here's gonna pay your bike note or your hospital bill. Some people choose not too- thats cool too, but when you start caring what strangers think about your safety decisions...
there are some diecent looking vests out.. like always i got left behind.. i thought you were talking about one of them construction vests.. the last link to the icon vest looked pretty good..
I wear a FirstGear mesh vest over my jacket in the winter and have never had a problem with the ID badge holder flying off at speed http://www.firstgear-usa.com/Mesh/CSSMilitaryVest.html. The vest is high vis during daylight and has a lot of reflective material for night riding; it is also fully adjustable, so no flapping in the breeze. During the summer I wear a high vis mesh jacket.

I have a bright lime green "can you see me" t-shirt now I wear under my vest a lot, and a wrap around reflective helmet band at night. I personally don't think you can over do it, because they don't look, we have to do the looking. there are some great looking jackets and chaps with relflective stripes that really show up at night too.
I have the hd hi vis jacket and so does the wife. I look at it as little
extra visability on those cloudy / overcast days. I can really see her pretty good.
