I was almost home after a great ride with friends for the day. I was signaling and slowing for a right turn into my neighborhood from a main street with a 45 mph limit. As I was downshifting about 20 feet from the intersection I looked in my mirror to see a car filling the entire surface of my mirror image and getting larger. I immediately hit the gas, luckily I had been downshifting, I was able to throttle up and keep going straight. About 3 seconds into this I hear the cars brakes lock up and look back to see the car sliding through the intersection. At this point I was able make a quick right and pull into a parking lot. I had enough control to give the car and its occupants a middle finger salute and a few choice words as they sped past in their $14.00 primered car, that I guarantee would NOT have had a bit of insurance. He was close enough I would have never made the turn without getting clipped.
I frequently check my mirrors at stops, I do not know for sure how often I do at turns, but I will be doing it religiously from now on. Just wanted to pass this on to keep all of you aware at all of the crucial times.
I'm constantly looking in my rear view when at a stop. Rear end collisions happen all the time to cagers and I hear more and more bikes getting nailed and I know it aint gonna be no picnic if it ever happens. Glad you were on your game.
Glad to hear you did not become another statistic. That's another reason that I leave my bike in gear with the clutch pulled in at stoplights, just because you never know. Like you said, chances are they had no insurance and even if they did, it's not worth getting yourself all busted up and having the bike wrecked.
Oh come on....I'm sure the poor guy was busy texting someone really important on his new Blackberry that cost some 30 times what his car was worth. And so what if he don't have insurance, you probably do[:@]
He was likely an illegal immigrant or a teenager that would be as hard pressed to pass a test for citizenship too.
I'm glad you checked your mirror, it's a habit that I practice.

I didn't want to get into a political or racial thing here, but I did see him and he probably took today off and is probably surrounded by a million of his reletives that also took today off if you know what I mean.
