Default Holy Crap! So. Cal. drivers!

Driving from Aneheim to San Diego and back today on vacation. Was wondering why I only saw a few bikes on the road, it was a nice sunny day, about 65 degrees or so at noon. Coming back to the hotel at 4:00 from San Deigo, traffic is going 70 to 75+ and some of the cages (I'm in a rented mini van by the way with all the kids and wife) are driving nutz on I-5! One poor guy on a road king is doing 70 in the center lane, a cage is swerving in and out of lanes at about 80+ and looks to almost rear end this guy. Changed lanes at the very last second, the RK is giving the cage the "look". It's like taking your life in your hands riding down here! No wonder I didn't see more riders. Crotch rockets were pretty thin too, just had a few pass us, a couple doing the lane splitting which I was totally unprepared for as they would pass on the right. Guys got some cahones to say the least......

Well hope the vacation is going great. The week end will be great weather. Relative to traffic you just get use to it. You just have to pay constant attention. One thing when you are in a wolf pack of real aggressive drivers. Get off the freeway and wait a minute then get back on. We have our line drivers do that and it works. It just takes one aggressive drive to set a bunch off. Once back on the road it becomes enjoyable again.

I was born and raised in So Cal, lived there for over 45 years. Traffic and the increase of illegals are the 2 major reasons I moved to Oregon. California has become a great place to visit, but sure don't want to live there now days.

All very true and why we moved to Kentucky in 2006. I gotta say I thought the comment on lane splitting was a riot. I guess it was just a way of life out there and I do miss being able to do it here. I5 north out of San Diego is life in the fast lane as is I15 headed toward Riverside. Either will require a lead foot to stay alive.

Cars regularly run about 90 on the freeways when there is not traffic. Carpool lane if available for me, but I'm used to all the maniacs out there. It's a way of life.

We were out there - just riding too fast for you to see us!!!! I often say that we have THEE WORST DRIVERS IN THE ENTIRE FRICKIN WORLD in So Cal. Main reason I white line at 80 and never ride in the middle of a lane - you're just aski for it!!!

So whats the problem? Just another trip down a SoCal freeway. Been doing it since '70
Considering the chaos out there I would rather ride the freeways during commute/work hours than any other time. These are folks that do it for a living, they are aware of the bikes.
Weekends? My bunghole is sucking cotton when I have to get on the freeway. Sunday drivers are the worst.

Spent most of the week last week working out of our LA office (on Santa Monica Blvd right off the 405) with a mid week trip to Portland thrown in for good measure. It was like going from one extreme to the other. I liked Portland better.
