I filled up tonight at a Valero. I never "lock" the handle beyond the first latch on the handle and this time was no different, until...
I'm standing there when all of a sudden the gas is coming out of the top of the tank and down the left side of the bike and it's not stopping. By the time I grab the handle and shut off the gas flow, the whole left side of the bike is smoking from the hot engine and I'm standing there waiting for the whole thing to go up in flames. It doesn't.
After safing everything as much as possible, I go inside and talk to the mindless folks behind the counter who don't have a clue about the seriousness of what just happened. When I kick it up a notch, they promise to tell the manager. I told them that would be a good idea because I didn't think their manager would want to buy a burnt to a crisp Harley for new prices. That got their attention, but by the time I'd left, they still hadn't come out to put a sign on the handle that the automatic fuel cutoff wasn't working on that particular handle. Oh well.
Moral of the story, NEVER EVER take your eyes off the gas while it's pumping!
I hear ya there! I am in the fuel buisness and the key is to monitor any nozzle manually because auto shut off nozzles make such a mess when they fail.
