Default Primary Oil Level

Before the flames come on:
I have checked the factory owners manual and it is not clear. I have also searched and could not find an answer.
When checking the primary drive oil level I know it is suppose to be at the bottom level of the clutch inspection opening, or there about.
Is the oil level checked when using the jiffy stand or setting level?

Flames? On this forum?

Bike should be level when checking primary. Put it on a lift or have someone hold bike level.

The manual for my 09 Ultra, page 160, says;

1. Ride the motorcycle until the engine is warmed up to normal temperature.
2. Stand vehicle upright on a level surface, so that the primary chaincase is level.
3. Remove five screws to free clutch inspection cover from primary chaincase cover.
4. Remove seal ring from clutch inspection cover and discard.
5. If the fluid level can be seen, it is adequate. Otherwise, pour enough GENUINE Harley-Davidson FORMULA+ TRANSMISSION AND PRIMARY CHAINCASE LUBRICANT (Part No. 99851-05, US quart) in through the clutch inspection cover opening until it is visible along the bottom portion of the clutch assembly.
6. Refer to Changing Chaincase Lubricant to install seal ring and clutch inspection cover.

Sounds simple enough. The capitalization shown is as it's printed in the manual. Please be sure to note the GENUINE Harley oil!

Good luck & Ride Safe,
Steve R.

I had the bike on my stand and started filling it to the bottom of the inspection hole, after putting a quart and half it still was not at the bottom of the hole. I stopped and read the owners manual and it said to put 32 oz, 1 quart, thus my confusion.

Your putting in way too much. You want it just visible towards the bottom of the clutch. NOT UP TO THE DERBY COVER OPENING.
Your bike is going to shift like a turd with that much fluid in there.

I always thought so but never heard any turds of mine clank like that...LOL...

As for the fluid, make sure its touching the bottom of the clutch assembly..kinda like from just after 5 to just before 7 on a clock...if you ahve any confusion, drain it as put in what it calls for...
