engine braking good or bad

engine braking good or bad

Fairly new to riding and catch myself engine breaking all the way down thru the gears coming up to a red light or stop sign... Does it cause any wear or do anything bad to your engine?

The only negative is having a toyota prius run up your **** when they don't see a brake light.

It is good, it won't cause excessive wear on the clutch.
Any wear on the rest of the drive train will be unnoticeable.

Yea, that's not so great! I make a habbit to squeeze the front brake a few times lightly to give that prius a few blinks to try to catch their attention.

IMO its a good thing as you will have ample power to speed up and avoid obstacles that may arise.

Probably won't harm your engine / tranny, but I'm sure it causes unnecessary wear. Your brakes are way more efficient at stopping you than your engine. The best reason not to engine brake is to get yourself in the habbit of using your brakes. Practice, practice, practice, then when emergency braking is needed, you won't even think about it.

The only time I use engine braking is when I am driving my truck w/trailer down a hill. Why not use the devices designed to slow down your vehicle?

In a racing aspect-you never use engine braking-That is the one time you can over rev your engine and cause major damage. The rev limiter only works in acceleration.
