I also know of some of the clubs, and could care less, not my scene. Some I would rather steer clear of and others the nicest guys you'll ever meet. As for the dealers, who ever said they needed to know about MCs. These days I'd bet less than 10% of their buisiness comes from club members. As for the knowledge base of the local dealer, that depends, my guys are pretty helpfull whether it's Wille G or for real custom. I was thinkin about an air horn (I know, not custom) and the parts guy steered me away from the HD part and toward a less expensive and louder horn (also looked better). And hey I like Willie G, I got the mirrors, derby cover, gas cap and foot pegs. That's as far as I'm going. I will however say that I've seen some Ness mirrors I would rather have had if I'd seen them first.

Most don't have a clue about customizing if it isn't offered up in the Harley catalog. I've had some tell me that if it says it doesn't fit in the catalog than that's the final word.....THAT is what I find naive. I want the old days back when there were actually bikers with ingenuity and thought outside the box...and a harley was just the bike you bought and looked elsewhere for customizing it. I say SCREW the Willie Skull Collection...THAT is NOT custom. It's Harley Marketing.
So does everyone know the history of their coffee maker that brews that first cup of java every morning? I'm just saying that just because you ride...or ride a harley...doesn't mean you have to understand the whole history...unless of course you want to. and to rag on someone that hasn't studied every aspect of the biking world just because they ride...or even work at a dealership seems harsh. I myself love bikes and do study most aspects of them but I surely don't give a care if somebody else doesn't. OOPS quoted the wrong guy...sorry
You are correct in that everybody has to learn sometime. The issue is some don't want to learn, they are "Above" all this! Know what I mean!
I know what you mean - that was probably part of what oldairboater was saying too. Heck, I still consider myself ignorant about a lot of it too but I am interested in trying to learn as much as I can - it's fascinating.
Maybe the lady in the dealership is just there to tell ya you look good in those new HD boots or TShirt and don't give a rats azz about 1%ers or bikes. Its just her job to sell you chit.
Most of the folks at Doc's really seem to enjoy working there. There web site has pics of them and there bikes, they know what they are talkin about. Do they know all of the MC clubs? Who knows, who cares?

Damn, you nailed me. I guess I'm just too old and contrary to take the time to learn every little detail about the history (as short as it may be) of all those colorful, fancy dressed crotch rocket riders hanging out at Hooters. I know they are part of the motorcycling lifestyle and all but, dammit, I'm just more interested in my own kind.
