In some parts of the world they steal those covers to sell as scrap metal.

I avoid them as long as it doesn't require a radical maneuver. Unless I'm feeling lazy and just don't feel like swerving.

I avoid them especially if they're open manholes!

no. but around here the manhole covers are usually 1-3"'s deep, because they have paved over and around them, and don't raise them back to street level..

Right, definitely best option is to straighten then brake, but if you can't, use the rear brake only...front brake will take you down line a "bionic magnet"(Borrowed term from someone on this forum).

i like to dodge everything in the road. i like to think that it helps me with my bike control.

ill dodge a leaf just for the fun of it, or try not to crush some poor ***** worm making his way across the street. keeps my eyes on the road and gives me some fun i guess

Along similar lines, anyone have experience with those huge metal plates they use to cover construction holes? There is one at a major intersection near my house that pretty much covers the entire road. I don't mind riding straight across it, but fear turning on the thing...and I often need/want to turn there. Of course, I know not to do that when it's wet/muddy/sandy, but wonder how the traction would be turning on it a little too "hot".
