Anyone besides me go out of their way to avoid manhole covers. Takes a little off my riding concentration on the road ahead, but I just can't stand them
NOT only manhole covers, but 'cracks', potholes, 'patches', railroad track crossings, bridge transition strips, I RIDE A HARDTAIL! You 'learn' to 'read the road'.
One of the reasons I ride 'tailgunner'. I can watch your back wheel. When I see your wheel 'bounce', I KNOW I am gonna have to 'stiffen up' for the BANG! And for that, I say, "Thanx".
I need to keep searching ahead and pick my line and watch the desired line instead of focusing on the thing I don't want to hit. I find myself sometimes running over the small water valve covers because I see them late because they are small and then focus and sure as heck I run right over them. They make a cool ringing sound but it's not a good thing because they can pop out if they get hit on the side.
I try to avoid them but still get whacked when my attention is diverted watching what the cell phone idiots are doing.
I have to admit that I see a huge difference in the FL reaction to the road compared to my old bikes. Gotta love that big-azz front tire, it really sucks up the bumps.
The roads are so terrible where I live in NJ that I can hardly enjoy my rides around town. I could be tossed over the bars if I hit some of the pot holes. NJ roads suck big time.
Avoid things in the road? I do.
We were on a dinner ride about halfway back in the pack. The guys ahead of us started pointing out a nicely opened roadkill coon on the left track of the lane we were in. The guy in the position ahead of me (in that track) hit it dead center. When we got to where we were going, he said he saw them point it out, but didn't think it would matter. LOL... he was on his new ultra.
I still kinda chuckle at it, all those guys pointing it out and swinging out around it, and he couldn't have looked more oblivious to it if he tried.
