I have a friend whose pipes are so loud no one will ride behind him. I wonder how the general public (non-Harley enthusiast) feels about his noise.
I know how "I" feel about it. I don't like it at all. I can imagine how a non-Harley enthusiast, or a non-motorcyclist would feel about it.
I've been riding for a long time. I've always liked the way Harley's sound in general and I don't mind modded exhausts on them. But when some guy rides by with straight pipes and I can't hear my TV in my own living room while he's there, it's too loud and uncalled for.
I am glad you all agree they have authority over you.
They do not follow their own arbitrary rules and they will change them to suit themselves.
You cannot win if you agree you are wrong.
For those of you who know you are wrong, I am sorry I cannot help you. Sell your bike and buy a prius. if you are cops, you know you are wrong, you just enjoy the benifits too much.
jamesw and mcrider, you must be on the state payroll. Pathetic.
Mike
I dont know how you say that a cop is wrong for enforcing a law that thay had nothing to do with making. The people that a responible for making laws in your city is the city council. If you feel so strongly about so called "stupid laws" then write or call your councilmen.
Im a cop in a city that just passed a noise ordanance. No one here is really happy with it becasue most of our dept rides Harleys or other motorcycles. But the city pays us to enforce the laws that the people in the city feel necessary. Some will enforce it and some wont, just like any other law. The reason this is becoming such a big deal is becasue so many are riding now and many are making their bikes as loud as they can and ripping through the citys. So on one hand i understand the law becasue at times it can be annoying but on the other, the city I work for dont really have much time to mess with it and the traffic unit already said that they wont enforce it unless they are forced, which they will be becasue for some reason the state is getting involved and giving citys grant money to enforce the noise ordance.
I guess the point of this stroy is if you dont agree with the law, tell your councilmen. They might not listen becasue most of them are stuffy nose liberals that hate motorcycles, but if they get enought heat from it they will be forced to address it. So instead of everyone complaining about the issue, take action like the good ol days.
Right or wrong, the city of Hannibal has been going after truck drivers with their eight inch wide straight pipes roaring through town with their engine brakes engaged, for many years now.
Sounding good is not about sounding the loudest. It's like with music. Crank the volume too high in it just becomes unbearable, no matter how good the music is.

I haven't seen evidence of it slowing down the big rigs or quieting them. But I could very well be missing that!
They have noise ordinance laws in lots of cities and towns now. I talked to several LEO's about this.. If it's daytime till evening time they usually won't say anything.. If you're riding 11pm or later and the sound would be considered disturbing to others peace. You might get pulled over and issued a ticket. The law does not read that way, but around here it seems like the police have decided to approach this from more of a common sense type of approach.
If you're are rolling in late from the bar, ride easy.
I want to know why I don't hear about kids in their damned junked import cars with 1000 watt stereos pumping out noxious rap music getting pulled over.
I went through this same issue except it was a color thing! So in honor of the local SCUM this is for them! A little town with a racial problem. I believe it fits....
