Default Feedback Appreciated

First of all, thanks to all for a great forum. I have been lurking for quite some time now and look forward to being more involved in this community.

I have long been in search of my first harley (motorcycle), and by search, I mainly mean having the right budget to acquire one...lol. I am in south texas and dealers don't seem to be affected too much by the economy at the present moment; however, these "negotiations" can extend for quite some time if the buyer has patience. Basically, here they are going at 1K over MSRP, plus freight, prep, TTL. I am in talks with dealers in central texas to see if I can come into an agreement on a better deal. Basically I'm now shooting at around 500 over msrp OTD on a super glide or street bob. Don't know if it's something that can be accomplished, but if not tried, it definitely can't.

In my search for the proper deal, I have learned of someone who as a hobby (and a small fee) "finds" motorcycles for people, mainly through auctions of trade-ins and repo's. Has anyone experience with motorcycles acquired in such manner? This person is the father of an old friend of mine, so I don't doubt his honesty; however, I am somewhat skeptical of the conditions of bikes acquired in such fashion....which is why I would appreciate the feedback of acquiring a motorcycle in such fashion.

Also, used Harley's acquired from a dealer (up to certain year back) can be bought and warrantied if out of warranty already. I assume it's the MoCo that offers the warranty and wonder if it's attainable on a bike acquired from other than a dealer? I figure that if you bring it into an authorized dealer and have them inspect it, this may be feasible? I appreciate any feedback on this as well.

Never been through it with a motorcycle, but have experience with auto brokers who do the same thing. You give them some parameters, (year, make model, condition, mileage, price) and they shop the wholesale channels, auctions, etc.

The deal you get is only as good as 1) how specific you are in the guidance you provide 2) how good the broker is in evaluating the vehicles against your desires and budget.

Most "extended" warranties are really insurance policies with specific coverage limits, deductibles, etc. There are lots of companies that specialize in vehicle extended warranties. My opinion is not to bother. Have any vehicle reviewed by a competent mechanic and budget for any needed maintenance or repairs when negotiating a purchase.

Does your friends father, the broker, know Harley Davidsons? A yes or no to that question may be the answer you seek.

You might check neighboring states. If you can get it at MSRP or less, you could find some cheap airfare and have a great ride back home.

Thanks for your input. I believe he can even access what's available online and it lists what the bike has and any damages that are reported or visible...it's my understanding anyway.

Yes, he's a motorcycle enthusiast and has owned many Harleys. He currently owns metrics, but enjoys all motorcycles just the same.

Agreed, the only reason I'm not pursuing this in other states yet is that I'm scheduled to take the Riders Edge course on July 16th. Soon after, I will be more aggressive on my search.

Thanks!

PS.- Is 500 over msrp otd attainable in your (anyone's) opinion?

Most folks take care of their Harleys evenwhen they don't takecareof theirother needs - like house, car, food, etc. Seriously though - most folks take pretty good care of their scoots. The thing to watch for in S. Texas right now is flooded bikes from Ike recent flooding down here.

As far as the $1000 over MSRP I am sure that Goe HD in Angelton can beat that. My wife bought me a new bike in Nov as a suprise and she got a great deal.

Give em a shout.

I say you need to have patience and shop around for yourself. I trust no one but myself when it comes to my money. Goe is a good dealership but I would shop around still.

Thanks Pirate,

Browsing their website they do seem to have more "comfortable" pricing on their used bikes; i.e the street bob.

I'm going to contact them about new bike pricing otd.

Thanks!
