have never "carried" a passenger,,,,,but I have had a passenger in the passenger seat within 10 miles. Becareful when you come to your first intersection.........it's not as easy to do the "slow rolling stop" with a passenger

Its not about mles ridden. Its about how comfortable you are with the bike and the way it handles, along with confidence in your own ability.
Yes I realize that, I was just wondering others have done. Ive set an absolute minimun of 100 as my preliminary bench mark, but I suspect it will be 2 or 3 times that many.
For me, not enough. My first passenger was shorter and heavier than I was. They were stretching up to look over my shoulder, got uncomfortable with that after a while and shifted to look over the other shoulder. The end result is I almost changed lanes into oncoming traffic!!!
It's important for you as the driver to understand the effect of the added weight on the bike. Its also important for your passenger to understand that they have way more effect on the bike than they might think they do. It's important for them to "not" do any sudden shifting of their weight without giving he driver a heads up first, especially if the bike is maneuvering at the time.
More importantly, it depends on the miles the passenger has under his/her belt as well. The rider has a little responsibility too. My wife is under $1.20, with a 700 lb bike and me weighing just under 200 I didn't figure I'd even feel her back there. She never rode and I instructed her pretty well but every now and again I feel her throw the bike. I correct her patiently so she'll want to continue to ride from time to time.
Just don't forget they are back there when stopping etc..

I did several thousand miles before I was willing to take on a passenger. I wanted to be sure that I was one with the bike before taking on the responsibility of hauling another person. Even then I spent some quality time in the parking lot doing exercises with the passenger, particularly stopping and slow tight turns before I took to the streets. That's just me...your results may vary.
