I'm thinking of trading in my 2005 Ultra Classic on a 2008 Softail Custom with 4K miles. I prefer the styling and lighter weight of the Custom over the Ultra. Also, the Softail has the TC96 motor. If you've ever moved from a bagger to a Softail, I'd like to know your thoughts. Any regrets?
Well, I now ride an 07 Road King Custom and love it but, in the past, I did trade a 91 Ultra on a 96 Softail Custom basically for the same reasons as you.
I liked the look, attitude and feel of the FXSTC and did not feel like the Ultra was me, so to speak. Don't misunderstand. The Ultra was a great touring bike but I never once regretted switching to the softail. In fact, I was always glad that I did. I modified the softail just the way I wanted it. I rode that FXSTC all over the south and west, took rides from Texas to Sturgis and all over the Rocky Mountains. Every time I threw my leg over that bike, whether for a cross country trip or just for a short ride (or even just in the garage because I usually could not resist sitting on it every time I saw it) I fell in love with it all over again.
A truly great bike that I never regretted getting. Good luck.
Ridden many softails? They feel way different to me, and not necessarily in a good way. How long have you had your FLHTCU? I know several guys who have gone from softail to touring, can't think of any who've gone the other way. (except to add a bike to their stable)
I took extensive test rides (rentals) on both baggers and the Heritage. The Heritage was for me and I rack up the miles. Baggers seem to be the trend now, but they aren't for everyone. To each his own.

What's good for the goose may not even be in the same ballpark. Everyone's different.

Went from an evo Softail Custom to an evo bagger then back to a evo softail. Wanted A TC RK real bad, test road one, hated it. Can't stand the baggers.
Different strokes ya know. Some people even like a hardtail best. Test ride it then decide.
I just got done with a 4 day ride on a rented 09 EG... I have to say I prefer my FXSTC. I have not been converted. I just like the ride and feel of the softail better. JMHO
