Crashed on LA Highway 22 westbound between Covington and Ponchatoula, LA. I took the scenic route home that day to stay off of I-12 and have a slow, relaxing ride. My brother is an A&P, and he was told by his instructor that the Federal Aviation Regulations were written in blood. I only posted so that others might avoid a similar accident. I considered myself a fairly competent rider with around 60,000 miles under my belt, but I learned that you can never let down your guard.
Thank you sharing your story. Your alive and that is the most important thing. A bike can be fixed or replaced. Here's to a speedy recovery
Many thanks to all. We really do share a common love and respect for one another that is absent in so many other areas of life. Mine was a minor incident compared to the suffering of those who have lost loved ones, or have been seriously injured. It means more to me than y'all know to hear from you!
This same exact thing happened to my buddy on a Road Glide last week. He was following a little too closely and some a$$hole decided to jam the brakes in a truck to make a right turn into his driveway and he ended up locking up, going down and rolling down the road. He too got road rash on both arms (primarily the left arm) and on hands. He pbought a protective jacket and plans to ride with gloves now. Ohh....and he also stated he learned his lesson about getting complacent and following too closely behind vehicles. We all know we do it...it takes accidents like this to remind us not to.
I'm not blaming anyone but myself here. I can't remember if I was following too close. I usually leave a good space between me and traffic in front. Just trying to emphasize that things happen real fast, and a moments inattention and not wearing proper gear has consequences. Y'all be safe out there, and thanks for the responses.
Well,I mistook the tone of your OP...thought you were blaming the cage...just playing 'devils advocate'...again,glad to here you are ok...could always be worse...
Sorry about your incident but thankful you are OK to talk about it. Heal up quick and get back on the road. I went down myself for the first time on June 2nd. Fast lane of the freeway and hit an oil spill left by a broken down rider I was slowing down to assist. I was lucky as well and had no broken bones and not even any road rash. I was just sore for a few days. Worst part of the whole incident was waiting for parts from HD to get me back on the road.
Someone slamming full on their brakes ahead of you is a rare occurance. You can feel all comfortable and secure that when it happens to you that you'll be prepared but, chances are, at least 10% of the time you are on the road you are not.
